How to make a great video advertisement

Here at TV in a Card Towers we are often asked by businesses to provide a short introductory video to help them target their portfolio of products and services to specific customers. For example, Mercedes have given us access to their video library and asked us to top and tail a few of their models to specific customers who are ready to change their cards. We do this by working directly with the showrooms and creating direct face to camera video addressing each potential customer directly. It’s surprisingly easy and cost effective.

It’s very important when considering what to put in your video advertisement to consider your target audience. This often will influence how you present your product, and your own comfort level. And many of our customers prefer a direct approach from the business owner – after all, they are often the person the customer is going to meet and this really helps move the sales process along in the early stages.

Some business owners are shy or simply ineffective on camera, and if we can’t find an alternative within the business we will use a professional, such as Mike Brewer from Deals on Wheels. He’s a natural and for car dealerships injects the enthusiasm that a showroom needs. Although this means spending a little extra cash, the right person in the right context can attract your target audience.

The most important element to making a video is the script. The script sets the theme and purpose and allows the participants to visualise the advert, which helps enormously with getting the finished product right.

Get the script right before bringing the cameras in. A good video script will save you considerable time – and money.

And don’t be afraid on shooting several takes – producing a great video is as much about editing as shooting, and once you have finished shooting that’s all the content you have – shooting the same scene three of four times may seem like a waste of time at the time, but it gives you the option of choice and the ability to add or remove things you may have overlooked at the time with spare footage to fill in any gaps.

And don’t get too carried away. Effective ads don’t need to be expensive; follow these basic guidelines and you will create effective – and cost effective – video advertising.
